'Odisha Development Forum' virtual meeting held for establishment of Berhampur Airport

The members of 'Odisha Development Forum' in a virtual meeting on 28 August, 2020 widely discussed about the hurdles coming for the establishment of an Airport in Berhampur city, Ganjam, Odisha.

The members expressed their displeasure on the negative approach, negligence and step-motherly attitude of Odisha government for the establishment of #BerhampurAirport.

In a press release the 'Odisha Development Forum' said the Expansion of Rangailunda (Berhampur) Airstrip was initiated by the Department of Civil Aviation in 2008 and the central government included Berhampur in the list of 49 low cost Airports.

The release said Odisha CM Shri Naveen Patnaik laid the foundation stone for a domestic #Airport in #Berhampur in 2016.
Former Union Civil aviation Minister in Modi government 1.0 Shri Ashok Gajapathi Raju promised for the establishment of a Domestic & Cargo Airport in Berhampur during his visit in 2016.
Union Minister Shri Dharmendra Pradhan also wrote to Union Minister of Civil aviation in 2020 for the establishment of #Brahmapur_Airport.
Expressing displeasure the members of the Forum said Civil Aviation Dept.is establishing airports in #Rourkela (just 90 km from #Jharsuguda) & in small towns of Odisha like #Utkela, #dhamara, Jeypore-but not in #Berhampur. They asked, Why it is doing so?

Putting forward the strengths of Berhampur the ODF said;
@ Apart from BBSR if any city has potentiality to run an Airport; i.e #Berhampur.

@ As per media reports around 40% passengers to BBSR Airport & 25% passengers to Vizag comes from this region.

@ #Berhampur is a commercial city with around 7 lakh population & the population of Ganjam District is around 40 lakhs.

@ People of 12 districts also depends on Berhampur for various purposes daily.

@ For BUSINESS,Education, Health care & tourism to #TaraTarini,Gopalpur, Chilka & #SouthOdisha lakhs of floating population depend on Berhampur because it is functioning as a gateway to South Odisha.

The Odisha Development Forum members said #Berhampur city is well deserved for a domestic airport but it is quite unclear why Ministry of Civil aviation and Odisha Government have never taken interest to establish an Airport in this city.
Finally the Odisha Development Forum members requested the Ministry of Civil aviation and Odisha Government to consider the decades old demand of Ganjam People for the establishment of an Airport in Berhampur; otherwise the forum will take others ways to bring this issue to the notice of the State government.
Forum President Ram Prasad Tripathy, Smt. Babita Patro, Swarajya Sahu, Laxminarayan Padhy, Ajaya Sahu, Raj Abhisekh, Prakash Pradhan, Akshya Dalai and others participated in the meeting.

Prof.  Prahallad  Panda was an extraordinary academic, writer, author, columnist and a communicator par-excellence who fought throughout his life for the backward region of Southern Odisha. Forum demands streetlights in Brahmapur

In a letter to Housing and Urban Development ( HUD) Minister Pratap Jena, Odisha Development Forum president Ram Prasad Tripathy has demanded to install lighting facility in various roads at the outskirts of Brahmapur city.   He said  now the city is growing very fast in its nearby rural areas but without proper lighting facility. Not only the new settlements are coming up at the outskirts of the city, but also various educational institutions, establishments, hospitals, industries and offices of organizations are coming up in nearby locations, which are coming under Brahmapur Development Authority (BDA).   However, due to lack of proper planning and vision many important junctions and roads of Brahmapur city outskirts and its nearby areas are still without proper lights and street lights.
